Digital Pulmonary Rehabilitation: What We Learned from the TROOPER Study
Living with COPD can be hard, but with the right treatment and support, many people live active, healthy lives.
One of the best ways to stay well is through Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR). PR combines exercise and education to help you:
- Walk further and feel less tired
- Manage your health and symptoms with more confidence
- Reduce flare-ups and hospital visits
- Need fewer GP appointments
Traditional PR is usually done face-to-face in a local centre, but we wanted to find out if digital PR, using an app at home works just as well.

Our Research: The TROOPER Study
We worked with an NHS respiratory team to run a research study. The full title of the study is: “Online versus face-to-face pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: randomised controlled trial.”
But we called it TROOPER for short. You can read the full publication here.
What We Did
Ninety people with COPD took part. After a check-up with their healthcare team, each person was randomly placed in one of two groups:
- Traditional PR: face-to-face sessions at a local centre, twice a week for six weeks
- Digital PR: daily exercises at home using an app, with weekly phone support from the PR team
We compared results for both groups before and after the 6-week programmes using:
- Walking distance: how far people could walk in six minutes (the 6-minute walk test)
- Symptoms: COPD Assessment Test (CAT)
- Mood: anxiety and depression levels
- Breathlessness: how short of breath people felt
What We Found Out
After six weeks, both groups improved:
- They could walk further
- They had fewer symptom
- They felt less anxious
- They were less breathless
The results show that digital PR works just as well as traditional PR, and both are safe and well-tolerated.
What This Means for You
Digital PR is a flexible and convenient option to help you stay well. You can:
- Use it alongside traditional PR
- Replace some sessions if it’s hard to travel
- Complete the full programme from home with check-ups before and after with the PR team
And the best part is digital PR is always available, so you can use it whenever you want to stay active and on track.
The digital PR programme is used in the myCOPD app. If you are interested in using myCOPD, please speak to your health care provider.
